Asheville- Day 1

Our reflections on this trip are written by Eli Stockton, a sophomore at Towson.

March 17th - Friday:

The first step of our crazy adventure to Asheville N.C. was picking up Lainey, Eli, Allison, Chad, and Katie. While on the road, we rocked out to “We Built This City” by Starship, “Hit Me with Your Best Shot” by Pat Benatar, and “Rocket Man” by Elton John. We stopped along the road in Virginia at one of Eli’s favorite restaurants CookOut, which is an American fast-food restaurant, with great food for cheap with amazing milkshakes. The restaurant was founded in Greensboro, NC in 1989. In the later hours of the road trip,  Allison, Eli, and Chad worked on different subjects on their laptops while jamming out with us.

Late in the night, we finally get to our first stop on the trip in Raleigh, North Carolina where North Carolina State University is located. We stayed at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, in  Raleigh, North Carolina where Pastor Kirsten Wee serves.  Kirsten was a former Program Assistant at the campus ministry at the University of Maryland and went on Spring Break trips with our ministry back in 2016!  Holy Trinity is a welcoming supportive church of and for all. It offers a place, especially for those that are a part of the LGBTQIA+ community, as well as serving one another, their community, and those in need.  Their motto is “Out of a broken and divided world, all people are welcomed into the Body of Christ at Holy Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church.”

While we were at Holy Trinity we explored the building, looked at photos of the church, and hung out in the campus ministry area talking to Kirsten who is the campus ministry leader. As we set up our sleeping bags and beds, we talked about our day, the road trip, and our plans for the trip. The excitement for the next day ahead was upon us, as we fell asleep dreaming about helping others.
