Holy Week marks the journey of Jesus' last days on earth. Join your brothers in Christ to remember and pray during the holiest week of our church calendar.
Palm Sunday (March 24)- marks Jesus' triumphant ride into Jerusalem before he was arrested a few days later. Many congregations mark this as Passion Sunday as well, often choosing to read the story of Christ's passion in worship.
Maundy Thursday (March 28)- marks the day when Jesus celebrated the Last Supper with his disciples and later is arrested. Congregations have many was to celebrate this day, including sharing a meal together, washing each others' feet, celebrating communion and stripping the altar of all its paraments before the service ends.
Good Friday (March 29)- marks the day that Jesus was crucified. Many churches have noon services to commemorate when Jesus was killed. Services on Good Friday are very somber and may include reading the 7 last words of Jesus. Communion is never celebrated.
Holy Saturday (March 30)- some congregations observe the Easter Vigil, one of the most ancient and symbolic services of the Christian church. It is a longer worship service, beginning in darkness, as if outside the tomb. Candles are lit as a sign of the promise of what is to come. There are many readings which speak to God's promise of new life. In the middle of the service, the lights come on and bells are rung as we celebrate the resurrection. From there, baptisms or remembrance of our own baptism is celebrated and a joyful celebration of communion follows.
Easter Sunday (March 31)- the joyful day of resurrection and the celebration that death is no match for the power of God!!
